Our History
E. C. Alderwick and Son Limited, a respected family funeral directors, was founded in Kingswood, Bristol during the 1940s by Ewart Coben Alderwick and his wife, May. With a deep commitment to providing compassionate and professional funeral services, Ewart and May laid the foundation for a business that would become an integral part of the Kingswood community.
Their dedication was further strengthened when their son, Roy, joined the family business. Roy, assisted by his wife Ruby, contributed significantly to its growth and reputation. He not only played a key role in the funeral directors but also became a well-known counsellor in Kingswood. His dual role as a compassionate funeral director and a community counsellor, along with Ruby’s invaluable support, made them beloved and respected figures in the community.
Continuing the family tradition, Roy's son Philip and son-in-law Derek joined the business. Today, Philip Alderwick and Derek Gunningham head up E. C. Alderwick and Son Limited, ensuring that the high standards set by previous generations are maintained. They are assisted by their wives, Jackie Alderwick and Stephanie Gunningham (née Alderwick), who contribute to uphold the family values.
Today, a fourth generation is actively involved in the operations of the business. Philip and Jackie's children, Steven, Katherine, and Eliot, along with Derek and Stephanie's children, Emma and Andrew, continue the family's legacy. Through their collective efforts, the business remains a trusted and cherished institution in the community, continuing the Alderwick tradition of compassionate service and unwavering commitment to the families they serve.
